Building has begun on a completely solar-powered sports stadium, the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, slated to open in Bordeaux, France, in 2015. Developed by Herzog & de Meuron and first unveiled in 2011 the solar powered stadium just broke ground this month. The stadium which was designed for the Euro 2016 football championship is set to be completed by 2015.
At 43,500 seats the massive stadium will be powered by a solar photovoltaic plant that can also supply the surrounding area with solar electricity. The stadium is located in Bordeaux, France’s Lac quarter (also known as the green belt district) and will be the headquarters of the Girondins de Bordeaux team year round.
